Types of Governments:

There are many different types of governments to choose from.

Democracy

A form of government in which the supreme power is retained by the people.

Direct Democracy

All citizens vote on all decisions.

Representative Democracy

Also known as republics.
Citizens vote on officials to represent them.

Federal Republic

A state in which the powers of the central government are limited and in which the component parts retain a degree of self-government.

Constitutional Monarchy

A system of government in which a monarch is guided by a constitution whereby their rights, duties, and responsibilities are spelled out in written law or by custom.

Presidential Government

Separation between executive and legislative branches.
Checks and balances.

Parliamentary Government

Executive leader is chosen by the legislative branch.
Example: a Prime Minister.

Autocracy

A state where one person has unlimited power control or power.
Examples: Saddam Hussein, Adolf Hitler, Muammar al-Qaddafi.

Monarchy

A type of autocracy.
Power is held by a single person, king, queen, prince, zar.
Power is passed to relatives.

Absolute Monarchy

A form of government where the monarch rules unhindered, i.e. without any laws, constitution, or legally organized opposition.
No limits on power.
Has power by birth rite.
Example: Saudi Arabia.

Dictatorship

A form of government in which a ruler or small clique wield absolute power(not restricted by a constitution or laws).
Single ruler, will not relinquish power.
No legal Limits on power.
Keeps power through political or military force.

Oligarchy

Form of government where only a few people hold power.
Examples: Aristocrats, military(Junta), religious, tribunal.
